Analysis of a film poster
Analysis of a film poster
What genre is the film?
Romance, Tearful, Drama.
Which genre conventions are referred to?
The colours used on the poster, for example greens and whites which make the audience think it is a romance film. Also the lighting is bright which reinforces that there is hope and love in the movie. The characters also give away that it is a romance genre as they are looking into each others eyes about to kiss. The fact that they are male and female and stereotypically good looking with airbrushed perfect makes us think of a perfect love story, but there is a tearful twist.
Which conventions of the form are used?
You usually find the following things on a poster:
Taglines, title of the movie, the main characters, the date the movie is released, credit blocks, a picture of the main characters, Distribution, Company logo’s and Film studios.
Describe the mise-en-scene in detail including location, lighting, costume, make-up
The location that the photo is set in, looks to be a calm setting. As the colour used are bright natural colours. The photo used reinforces that the couple is in love as they are staring into each others eyes and you can see the strong connection and relationship they have. The lightning used in the poster is bright, which reinforces love, hope and happiness. The make up that the models are wearing make their skin look perfect, which relates back to the idea that they are in a perfect love relationship.
What symbols are used in the poster? Do you need audience foreknowledge to decode the symbols?
Eye contact is the main symbol on the poster as it shows that all the care about is that they are in love and happy and don't care what is going on around them as long as they have each other. However, you may argue that they are holding eachother which reinforces that they want to do everything together, and they come as a couple, not singular.
What are the main figures/objects/background of the poster? Are they represented photographically?
The main object is a photography of a couple that are obviously in love. The background of the poster is blurred but you can see that they are in a house that looks onto a garden. You know they are both happy as they are smiling and the lighting is bright which reinforces happiness and hope.
How does the layout of the poster affect its message?
The layout of the poster affects the message, because all the writing on the poster is center aligned which reinforces that everything is equal to them and they share everything, because the gap between the writing and the side of the poster is equal. Also the models names are at the top of the poster, but her name is above his head and his name is above her head which shows that they are a package and in love with each other. The rule of thirds lines cross in line with their lips and where there arms cross to hold each other. They have put all the writing, for example the credit blocks and the sponsors at the bottom of the page to keep the attention on the couple. They have put the title on a rule of third line to make it stand out and grab people attention.
Describe why the designer has used the particular typeface.
Taglines, title of the movie, the main characters, the date the movie is released, credit blocks, a picture of the main characters, Distribution, Company logo’s and Film studios.

Describe why the designer has used the particular typeface.
The typefaces used are clean, (not distorted) and are known to be sans serif. They have used this particular type face because even though it is thin and delicate, it still stands out and grabs the audience's attention. They have put the word ‘VOW’ in the same typeface this is because it stands out more than the word ‘THE’ because the word vow means A solemn promise, which reinforces the love and trust they share. Also the colours of the typefaces stands out because they are the same colour as the blurred background.
What visual camera techniques have been used?
The camera shot was a mid level shot, as well as being a two shot, which indicates that its a normal life, with normal love and no extra complications as they are in love and thats all that matters to them.
Are the messages in the poster primarily visual, verbal, or both?
The messages in the poster are primarily visual as you look at the characters first and then straight away you know that its a love story as there body language shows their relationship they have.
Who do you think is the intended audience for the poster? Why?
I believe that the intended audience for the poster is females as the genre of the film is a tearful romance which usually appeals to females more than males. This is because women usually show their feelings more than men, and this film is full of emotions.
Given that all movie posters have the same purpose - to get audiences to go see a movie - what persuasive techniques does the poster use?
The persuasive techniques used make you want to go watch the film. For example, the main characters names are at the top of the poster which grabs the audience's attention and persuades them to go watch the film if they are interested in those particular characters. Also the characters are attractive which may also draw someone in and persuade them to watch the film. In addition, the genre of the film is given away by their body language and the colours, so people that enjoy romance films are persuaded to watch it.
What USP is used?
The unique selling points that are used are the names and the pictures of the main characters. For example if someone like Channing Tatum as an actor they would be more likely to watch it compared to someone that doesn't like him. Also the tagline ‘Inspired by true events’ could be a unique selling point as someone might want to watch it because they can relate to what happens in the story as it could've happened to them in the past.
Are "expert witnesses" (ie critics) quoted?
There are no expert witnesses on this poster, but you may find them on other film posters of this series.
What pleasures (gratifications) are promised by the poster?
The pleasures promised by the poster are love romance and passion, because they are looking into eachothers eyes in love. The poster also promises you good looking characters as they are in the main image. However the poster also promises sadness, because nothing is perfect in life and it says inspired by true events which makes you think that nothing in life is perfect so there must be a twist.
How is attention gained (humour, shock, surprise familiar face of a star)?
Attention is gained because the main characters are famous because of their great acting. This grabs people's attention because they are well known to be good actors which may persuade them to watch the film. Also the fact that the title is on the rule of thirds line makes you focus your attention on it.
How does the tagline work? (humour, pun, alliteration etc?)
The tagline ‘Inspired by true events’ makes the audience think that they may be able to relate to the story as the film is based on a true story. However I think that it is a dull tagline because it does not explain or give any of the narrative away.
